I have always loved to read and as a young person frequently read for hours on end. I remember being suprised it had gotten dark. As an adult with a job and a family, I rarely have that kind of time, and it was such a gift to sink into my book. I did not stop after each chapter to check my phone, and I did not pause to look things up, the two activities that most frequently pull me out of whatever I’m reading. I was more in tune with the narrative structure of the novel because I was not imposing breaks, and I was more in tune with my own reading mind. I was also significantly less in tune with the outside world – my mind was almost entirely engaged in reading and very little thought was given over to things happening in the world or in my life. I appreciated the chance to be reminded what it feels like to read without interruption for an extended period, and I hope to make time to read in this way more often.
